In 1986 a holographic technology and art exhibition took place in the university town of Karlsruhe. The slogan was "Holomedia - Faszination in Licht und Ton" (translates to "Holomedia - Fascination in Light and Sound"). The German Postal Service ("Deutsche Bundespost") issued a machine cancellation which was applied on regular used mail items. Since machine cancellations at that time were not considered worth collecting most of the mail items have been lost. Only a few items have not been destroyed by taking the stamps off or not ending up in junk boxes and garbage cans. The post card shown is one of the few surving items and can be regarded as one of the earliest collectors items referring to holography and holograms.
