The change over from 1999 to 2000 gave collectors the opportunity to obtain special cancellations. Different post offices and mail centres offered "Millenium" cancels and the Deutsche Post AG  permitted two different date cancels on regular run mail items for the first time in its history.

Deutsche Post offered a special philatelic mail service at their Berlin location for date cancels on Dec. 31, 1999 and January 1, 2000. It was the best opportunity to get two different dates on one letter which would  be sent through the mail distribution system of Deutsche Post. See sample below:
